A Streetcar Named Design: A Creativity Competition
Wednesday 29 January 2025

During the 13th edition of the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne between 22 May - 6 July 2025, the Cité du design and the Saint-Étienne public transport company (STAS), a longstanding partner of the Biennial, will organise the fourth edition of the Streetcar Named Design competition for design students from France and internationally. The aim of the contest: The goal of the contest is to design a complete covering for one of the CAF trams on the Saint-Étienne Métropole transport network, which will circulate during the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne. The theme: This competition will celebrate the 13th edition of the Biennale, aligning with its central theme: 'Ressource(s), présager demain'. The core focus should be on the theme of the Biennale. Candidates are free to interpret the theme in their own creative way, but all designs must resonate with it. Who can participate? The competition is open to students or groups of students enrolled in the 2024-2025 academic year, in 4th, 5th, and 6th-year design courses, as well as post-graduate (and/or post-master) design courses. Participants must be studying at one of the French schools in the ANDEA network (National Association of Public Art and Design Schools), schools in the UNESCO Creative Cities network, or partner schools of the Esadse/Saint-Étienne Higher School of Art and Design worldwide. The winners of the competition will gain long-term visibility, as the winning designs will remain in circulation well beyond the Biennale. The winning team or student(s) will have the opportunity to decorate a Saint-Étienne Métropole tram for long-term display, joining those from the 2017, 2019, and 2022 editions that are still circulating today. A €4,500 prize will also be awarded to each winner.
