ELIA warmly congratulates Professor Karen Stanton on her appointment as the permanent Vice-Chancellor of University of the Arts London (UAL), the first ELIA Supporting Member based in the UK.

Professor Stanton has served as Interim Vice-Chancellor since September 2024, following the departure of James Purnell, where she has used her in-depth knowledge of higher education and empathetic approach to support UAL through a crucial period of change.

“Having been impressed with Karen’s work as Interim Vice-Chancellor, Governors encouraged her to apply for the permanent role. We are thrilled that she agreed to do this; we are even more excited that she is the successful candidate. Given her track record at UAL and in her previous roles in higher education, the Court is confident that Karen’s leadership can make us the global leader in creative education.

— David Isaac CBE Chair of UAL’s Court of Governors

UAL has been a valued and longstanding member of the ELIA community since its inception in 1991, contributing to many ELIA events and initiatives over the years. As a Supporting Member, UAL continues to play a vital role in actively shaping the development and direction of ELIA’s current and future projects and activities within and beyond the sector.

Maria Hansen, ELIA Executive Director, stated:

“Under Karen Stanton’s leadership, UAL is well-positioned to continue its strong legacy as an institution that nurtures creative talent. Her focus on evolving and expanding the university’s offerings reflects a deep understanding of the changing needs within the arts and creative industries, ensuring UAL’s continued relevance and leadership on both national and international stages.”

ELIA looks forward to continuing its collaboration with UAL in advancing arts education. All of us at ELIA wish Karen every success in her new role!
