Social Economy Europe invites students to submit original short film or visual design by 2nd April 2027 at 23:59 CET to showcase their work in Lisbon and join Europe's next generation of of social economy changemakers.

Background

Young people are key actors in shaping a more sustainable, inclusive and democratic
present and future. At the same time, awareness of the social economy among
younger generations remains limited despite its key role to addressing social,
environmental and economic challenges across Europe.

To bridge this gap, Social Economy Europe is launching the Social Economy
Awards 2027 under the theme "Youth creating the present and the future of the
Social Economy". The initiative seeks to engage young students (18-30) from
across Europe in interpreting, communicating and promoting the social
economy through creative disciplines. Participants can work alone or in teams.

What is the social economy?

The social economy is an economic approach that puts people and the planet first,
supports social inclusion, strengthens communities, answers local needs, and
contributes to more democratic and resilient societies. It delivers solutions to
social, environmental and economic challenges through organisations and enterprises
that prioritise collective benefit over profit maximisation, reinvest all or most of the
profits and surpluses to further pursue their social and/or environmental objectives,
and are governed through democratic and participatory decision-making
processes. By ensuring that both wealth creation and decision-making serve the
common good, the social economy contributes to greater economic and social
justice.

The awards have three categories and participants can work alone or in teams:

Category 1: Short film award

For students in cinema, audiovisual production, journalism, and animation.

LNAA Re-elects Vasyl Kosiv as Rector

------Scroll down for Ukrainian version-------

We are pleased to share news from our member institution in Ukraine that on 18 June 2026, the Lviv National Academy of Arts held rectoral elections, and the academic community has voted to re-elect
Vasyl Kosiv for a second term.

The vote reflected a strong institutional consensus - 270 members of the academy community took part (88.82% of eligible voters), with Vasyl Kosiv receiving the support of 260 participants, representing 85.53% of the total electorate. Voters included
academic and teaching staff, students, and administrative personnel.

Vasyl Kosiv has led LNAA since 2022. A Doctor of Art History, professor, designer and researcher, he graduated from the Lviv Academy of Arts and has been part of its faculty since 1998. His career has spanned academia and public life on both sides of
the Atlantic - he taught at Kansas State University and worked at the National Design Museum in New York, held a Fulbright fellowship at Columbia University, and served as Deputy Mayor of Lviv for Humanitarian Affairs from 2006 to 2013. He is also
the author of a monograph on Ukrainian identity in graphic design during the Soviet period.

Looking ahead, the academy’s priorities for the coming years include strengthening its international presence as a centre for art, design and art history education, deepening LNAA’s role as an expert institution in shaping cultural and arts education
policy, and continuing to build a contemporary learning and research environment for students and staff alike.

We congratulate Vasyl Kosiv on his re-election and look forward to continued collaboration.

You can read more about the re-election here in Ukrainian.

Exhibition: Dream Stream at BIENNALE ARTE 2026

About Dream Stream

The exhibition, Dream Stream, at the China Pavilion at BIENNALE ART 2026, the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia opened on May 8. It is hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China, with the Art Museum of the China Academy of Art (CAA) serving as the curatorial institution. Led by Professor Yu Xuhong, President of CAA and Director of CAA Art Museum, the curatorial team reveal the Eastern cultural lineages in the digital age.

Dream Stream (Mengxi) takes its name from Dream Stream Essays (Mengxi Bitan) by Shen Kuo, a scholar of the Northern Song Dynasty. Completed in the eleventh century, the Dream Stream Essays documents, in a notebook style, its author’s
observations and reflections on the myriad phenomena of the natural world. It contains some of the earliest accounts of scientific phenomena such as the camera obscura and supernova explosions, alongside refined critiques of painting, calligraphy,
and poetry. This mode of “observing things to investigate their underlying principles”, together with a cosmological vision of the “unity between humanity and the universe”, constitutes the distinctive intellectual and spiritual texture of the essay
    collection.

Titled Dream Stream, the China Pavilion takes stream as its guiding metaphor and dream as its experiential horizon. In dialogue with the introspective tone of the Biennale’s overarching theme In Minor Keys, it unfolds
a poetics of fluidity to articulate a conversation between Eastern philosophy and contemporary art. Forging the past and present into a living site of art-science symbiosis, the exhibition uses natural imagery as its foundational vocabulary and transmedia
expression as its mode of inquiry, allowing traditional sensibilities to be revitalized in the digital age.

When the Chinese classical triad of “Firmament, Earth, and Human” is transforming into a new existential framework: “Firmament, Earth, Human and Algorithms”, what role does art play? The integration of art and science opens new frontiers for creation
and points toward the future. Breaking through conventional boundaries, the exhibition brings together calligraphy, moving image, installation, digital narrative, and cutting-edge technologies, highlighting such compelling moments as the philosophy
of light and shadow, the unity of mind and brush, the meditative gaze across long handscrolls, and the interconnection between heaven and earth.

About BIENNALE ARTE 2026

The 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia – titled In Minor Keys by Koyo Kouoh – runs from Saturday 9 May to Sunday 22 November 2026 at the Giardini and Arsenale venues, in various locations across Venice and at Forte Marghera. With the full support of Koyo Kouoh’s family, La Biennale di Venezia decided to carry out her Exhibition. It will do so by following the project just as she conceived and defined it, with the purpose of preserving, enhancing and disseminating her ideas and the work she pursued.

Exhibition: CLUSTER. Symphony of Data

About CLUSTER. Symphony of Data

The Higgs boson, through light and sound in an interdisciplinary project that brings together art, technology, and science within a synergistic space

It will be presented to the public on May 23, on the occasion of the Europan Night of Museums 2026, at the Galleria Accademia Contemporanea of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma: CLUSTER. Symphony of Data, a data visualization and data sonification installation created by the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare together with the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma as part of EAR – Enacting Artistic Research, a project funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU.

At the core of this original project—developed by experimental particle physicist Biagio Di Micco (Università degli Studi Roma Tre and INFN), by media artist Cristian Rizzuti and sound artist Riccardo Torresi, together with students from Roma Tre and
the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma—are the experimental data on the Higgs boson provided by the Atlas experiment, which operates at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva.

CLUSTER. Symphony of Data invites the public to take part in an immersive experience generated through the real-time processing and translation of data from the Atlas experiment. Presented through a combination of lasers, video projections, and generative
sound, events and numerical values are transformed into a visual and sonic composition in which the subatomic collisions that produce the Higgs boson are represented on a screen evoking a section of Atlas.

The resulting choreography of light, form, and sound reflects the complexity and beauty of particle physics. The viewer is drawn into an audiovisual narrative that oscillates between scientific precision and artistic sensitivity, between the order of
data and the chaos of sensory interpretation. It is an open laboratory in which art and science meet and actively collaborate in shaping new ways of seeing reality, enhancing the encounter between different skills, sensibilities, and languages.

Preceding the inauguration of the installation, on May 22 at 5:00 PM, a public talk will be held in the Aula Magna dedicated to Lea Mattarella at the Academy on Via Ripetta. During this event, the project will be presented by the scientific coordinator
of EAR – Enacting Artistic Research, Beatrice Peria, and the WP4 coordinator Dalma Frascarelli, together with the team behind CLUSTER—Biagio Di Micco for the scientific component, and Cristian Rizzuti, Riccardo Torresi, and Julian Alvarez for the
artistic realization—who will provide a scientific contextualization of Higgs boson physics and recount the process that led to its artistic interpretation.

It is with sadness that ELIA mourns the loss of Hjálmar Helgi Ragnarsson, who passed away on 13 March 2026.

Hjálmar Ragnarsson was an Icelandic composer and an important voice in the country’s contemporary music scene, whose work was recognised both in Iceland and internationally. He made a lasting contribution to higher arts education as an elected member
of ELIA’s Representative Board (2012–2014), having been an active ELIA member since he became Rector of the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 1998. As Rector, he played a key role in shaping the institution, bringing together different artistic disciplines
under a shared vision and helping to establish the Academy as a vital centre for arts education and cultural life in Iceland. Hjálmar also trained as an assessor for EQ-Arts.

He was a valued friend to ELIA and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

About the residency

This residency is designed for doctoral researchers pursuing research-creation work. It is primarily aimed at international candidates and was developed as an extension of the RADIAN doctoral programme.

Open to PhD candidates from international Higher Education institutions, this six-month residency offers a supportive environment for artistic production, critical experimentation, and reflective practice. Participants are invited to develop their research
through dialogue with diverse methodologies, practices, and conceptual frameworks, while immersing themselves in a dynamic ecosystem of pedagogy, academic and artistic exchange.

The residency also fosters intellectual and trans-disciplinary dialogue within the school, enhancing the circulation of ideas and practices across international contexts, and actively supporting doctoral trajectories at the intersection of research and
creation. At the end of the six-month residency, the PhD candidate is invited to conceive and curate an exhibition at ésadhar. Designed as a critical platform for the public dissemination of their research, the exhibition
also acts as a pedagogical intervention that renders visible the experimental, trans-disciplinary, and situated methodologies developed throughout the residency. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication, contributing to the dissemination
of the work within the scientific and artistic communities, as well as to a broader audience.

Deadline for submission: 31 May 2026

Emancipatory Learning: Addressing power structures through bottom-up Initiatives

It responds to an urgent question: how do we sustain meaningful EDI learning in a context where polarisation is intensifying, and even core concepts such as “dialogue” are increasingly met with distrust? This was a growing reality within our institution throughout 2024.

While our broader EDI programme offers both situational (within one’s own context) and collective (through events aligned with the social calendar) learning opportunities, we recognised a need to go further. Rather than only facilitating reflection, we sought to create conditions for agency - the capacity of individuals and collectives to act within, and upon, their environments.

This led us to develop a framework grounded in several key principles. First, we prioritised bottom-up initiatives, supporting students and staff who were already engaging with these tensions in their own practices. Second, we made power structures an explicit focus -not as abstract concepts, but as lived dynamics shaping what can be said, done, and imagined within institutional spaces.

The contributions of HKU master’s students Nande Overtoom and Camiël Kesser were formative in sharpening our understanding of agency. Their work highlighted two crucial shifts. Agency is not located in the isolated individual, but emerges relationally -between people and within the specific social and institutional contexts they inhabit. In addition, agency is temporal: it is shaped by past experiences, enacted in the present, and oriented toward future possibilities.

The workshop draws on a constellation of practices and traditions: spatial and artistic explorations of wishes and boundaries (Overtoom), story circles methodologies rooted in the American civil rights movement (Kesser), and appreciative inquiry grounded in organisational development (Abas). Bringing these together is not incidental. We believe that addressing EDI as a continuously developing knowledge domain requires plural, intersecting ways of knowing and practicing.

Rather than following a linear structure, the workshop is designed as a modular experience. Participants actively assemble and test possibilities for change within their own institutional contexts, moving between past, present, and future, and between individual and collective modes of engagement.

What became immediately visible during the workshop was the depth of engagement participants brought into the space. Equally striking was the collective ethos that emerged: despite working on different questions, participants demonstrated a strong commitment to “doing the work” together. This may suggest that even in polarised contexts, there remains a desire -and a capacity- for shared inquiry and action.

Due to the relational nature of the workshop, participation was limited to 16 people. Yet within this small group, a meaningful learning environment emerged.

We wholeheartedly thank the participants who took this journey with us and for their appreciation of the work, whether for the intimacy of the setting or for the opportunity to view the future through the lens of concrete possibilities.

They also unite society through collective participation. They can even address issues of global importance such as climate change.

HKAPA has incorporated the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its management and curriculum. Academy Director Professor Anna CY Chan believes that responsible artists and cultural leaders should have the courage to blaze new trails rather than simply following the trodden path.

"We need to rethink how to promote the arts in a sustainable fashion," she says. "Aside from raising public awareness, we need to adopt relevant measures in our artistic practices."

The Academy aims to provoke a "green revolution" in the local arts industry while also staying committed to passing down its cultural legacy.

Through revitalisation, innovation, education, and community engagement, it strives to foster cultural preservation and artistic exchange, in the hope of creating a sustainable future where people and the environment coexist in harmony.

The ethos inspiring this drive stipulates that an artist's mission should not be confined to aesthetic pursuits. At a time when climate change and sustainable development are issues of global concern, artists should also concern themselves with their own environmental responsibility as well as the sustainability of the performing arts industry.

The Academy is proactive in its promotion and implementation of sustainability concepts as a result. Building on Europe's STAGES (Sustainable Theatre Alliance for a Green Environmental Shift) collaboration and the Theatre Green Book, Professor Chan incorporates tradition, innovation and sustainable development into education theory and practical training.

"We need to be aware of the interconnections between artistic creation and ecology, society and the economy," Professor Chan maintains. "We should deploy technology to enhance cultural preservation, and we should strive to make a change in society and the environment."

Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the Academy works with different sectors of society to build core ideas on cultural sharing and formulate an effective reform proposal for the cultivation of creative talent. "We need to ensure performing artists of the future and industry leaders are equipped with these social values, and a concern for global trends and topics," she states. "This is our mission."

The Imperative of Green Production

On how to turn ideas into action, Professor Chan indicates that the Academy will strive for breakthroughs in sustainable development at all stages of its efforts, from curriculum design, through production and operation, to venue construction. The aim is to redefine local contemporary theatre. Productions such as dance works will be scrutinised to assess their sustainability. "We must ponder how to convey the relevant messages onstage every step of the way, from design concept to backdrop, wardrobe and rehearsal," Professor Chan indicates.

This new way of thinking will refresh old practices. For example, students will no longer make props just for a single production. They must be made with an eye on re-use.

Professor Chan admits this represents a significant challenge. "Cheap production materials are easily available online," she concedes. "While they may simplify the props-and backdrop-making process, they exacerbate the problem of over-consumption. Change needs to start with the local industry. Only action can put a stop to high-speed consumption." She adds that storage space is also a factor in implementing green theatre. "Space is required to keep production materials for the next production. It is another of our considerations."

To gather views and suggestions, Professor Chan and stakeholders organised the first Hong Kong Culture and Sustainability Conference (CUSU) last November. CUSU is a platform for the pooling of ideas on how to implement sustainable development in Hong Kong, especially in the performing arts. The next CUSU conference, to be held at the Academy this coming October, will explore topics of culture and sustainability from an Asian point of view. The Academy will also share research and empirical data in sustainable performance productions and related areas accumulated over the past year.

Putting Green Living into Practice

Sustainable development may be zealously discussed in global climate conferences, but encouragingly, it is also practicable in almost every moment of daily living. Patrick Lee, Deputy Director (Administration) of the Academy, points out that creating a sustainable campus is a shared mission for the Academy as well as its teachers and students. As such, it requires the dutiful participation of everyone for its success.

"As a forest therapy guide and nature lover, when I see green, I don't just see a forest, I see environmental protection," Mr Lee says. "When I take a stroll on campus, I feel the care our members lavish on the environment, such as switching off lights and air conditioning after a lecture to save energy, bringing their own cups and eating utensils to reduce use of disposables, thereby honouring the commitment to zero waste. I see waste being sorted and used items being recycled to give resources a new life and maximise their value." As these "little" habits build momentum, they contribute to a more sustainable earth.

Mr Lee believes that a sustainable campus is an organic ecosystem teeming with life where, in classrooms, teachers impart professional knowledge as well as concepts of environmental protection and sustainability; and in everyday life, students put theory into practice through green habits and a concern for nature.

"Looking ahead, infrastructure such as green buildings, a rainwater-harvesting system, and solar panels will also become teaching materials, enabling us to live in alignment with nature," he indicates.

Mr Lee believes that a sustainable campus is only possible with everyone's input. He calls upon HKAPA community to sow the seeds of sustainability and water them daily as a good start toward a greener future. "May eco-consciousness extend from the campus to the community, and take us to ever-broadening horizons, becoming a beacon of warmth and light for the world," he insists.

The Search for Statues

HKAPA aims to be a trailblazer for sustainable development in the arts, from talent cultivation and technological innovation to cultural preservation. In 2003, the Academy was handed the reins for the management and restoration of the historic Béthanie sanatorium, built by Missions Étrangères de Paris (the French Mission).

In the Academy's hands, the site has transformed into a heritage campus for training talent in film and television. When restoration began, Béthanie had been abandoned for many years. Some of the chapel's components had been lost, including the statues of the Twelve Apostles. Four were subsequently uncovered. Over the years, the Academy searched high and low, appealing to the public for information on the remaining eight. Last year, what is potentially the fifth statue was discovered.

According to records, Béthanie's 12 statues of the apostles were crafted in France. The four statues on the Béthanie campus are now replicas. The original statues of St Matthew, St Thomas and St Paul are kept by St. Clare's Girls' School, and a fourth is in the possession of a private collector in the US.

Early last year, a local archaeology team contacted the Academy, indicating that a statue of St Johannes at St. Clare's looked uncannily similar to the three previously discovered at the same location. Willie Kua, Deputy Head of Campus Development, liaised with the team and consulted Philip Soden, who was project director of the Béthanie restoration while serving as Associate Director (Operations) at HKAPA. After extensive field work and comparison studies, they concluded that the statues could very likely belong to the same set.

Mr Soden had asked what's now called the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts (TEA) to reproduce the four statues with silicone moulding. Any new replicas should be more advanced. With advanced replication technology now at the School of TEA's disposal, Mr Kua notes, "3D scanning saves time as it does away with the need for repeated moulding and testing, and allows replicas to be made with environmentally friendly materials."

Marriage of Technology and Tradition

The person in charge of the replication, Adam Bain, Senior Lecturer in Property Making at the School of TEA, points out that the St Johannes statue has three damaged fingers but is otherwise in fairly good condition. "There were no old photos to use as reference," he notes. "We could only infer from similar statues how the fingers looked and how they were positioned. This was the biggest challenge."

However, other aspects of replication and restoration are simpler. In contrast to the moulding process in use 20 years ago, modern 3D scanning and printing incurs no risk of damage to the original. It is also easier to make adjustments and repairs such as reconstructing the fingers and fixing peeled paint.

Adam recruited the assistance of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to identify the statue's material using X-ray fluorescence. That analysis detected the presence of volcanic ash. As there are no volcanoes in France, it was assumed the material had come from southern Italy.

"The result of the analysis was immensely helpful," Adam says. "A replica needs to honour authenticity, a principle of relic preservation."

Aside from accuracy, the team also has to ensure their methods are sustainable. "If we were to reproduce the statue using ceramic clay, procuring volcanic ash from southern Italy is not an ecofriendly option," Adam continues. "Using volcanic ash from Chinese Mainland takes care of that aspect without affecting the results." Adam says he has approached a local 3D printing service to acquire biodegradable materials that will contribute to a recyclable and degradable finished product that has minimal impact on the environment.

Technology has changed the way props are made. Computer-controlled procedures minimise carbon emissions and the production of solid waste. But Adam stresses that digital technology and Artificial Intelligence can never replace traditional craft. "We cannot jump from zero to 3D," he says. "We need to understand traditional craft while also learning to use technology. Both approaches hold their own worth."

The School of TEA is integrating know-how and experience gleaned from this project into its curriculum. Or Pui-yee, a fourth-year student in the Department of Theatre Design, sees this as a great learning opportunity.

"Projects in the past leaned heavily towards stage production," Ms Or says. "This one, being about relic preservation, opens up a path for the application of production technology to other areas." She will replicate the statue using materials that are as close to the original as possible, and her work will be displayed at the graduation exhibition in June and July.

Legacy and Development

St. Clare's Girls' School, around 1.5 kilometres west of the Béthanie campus, was founded in 1927. Principal Mrs Cherry Chan points out that St. Clare's started out as a convent of the school's sponsoring body, the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Angels from Canada. The nuns lived at the site for many years. Mrs Chan speculates that the French Mission, which sold the Béthanie site in 1974, passed the statues to the sisters to keep. The apostles have watched over generations of teachers and students at St. Clare's as a result. Mrs Chan ascribes St. Clare's connection with HKAPA, on the eve of the school's centenary, to serendipity and "god's will". "HKAPA is an ideal manager for the Béthanie," she says. "It has the resources, talent and professional knowledge to make replicas of the statues, which in turn offer students opportunities for research and hands-on learning. All this has been extremely meaningful."

The Béthanie which opened as a sanatorium for missionaries in 1875, celebrated its 150th anniversary last year. This year, 2026, marks the 20th anniversary of the Academy's official takeover of the site. To rediscover the likely statue of St Johannes at this time suggests the Academy is headed in the right direction, working on the sustainable and interdisciplinary preservation of relics, to safeguard history for future generations.
