VIS (Nordic Journal for Artistic Research) Open Call #17 invites artistic researchers to submit an exposition proposal on the theme of "Touch". Deadline is 14 May 2026 at 23:59 CET. Editor: Gunhild Mathea Husvik-Olaussen.

The theme examines how the explosive power of touch connects micro- and macro-perspectives within artistic practice, and how alternative forms of touch may enable new artistic expressions. The theme highlights both the relationship between the artist, movement, and materiality, as well as contact with audiences and other actors.

Multilingualism is encouraged and valued. VIS welcomes artistic research in which language choices have been carefully considered, and the solution that best serves the artistic practice and its accessibility has been selected. If multiple languages are used, a complete translation into one of the following languages must be provided: Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or English, so that the editorial committee can engage with the entire content.

The call for VIS (Nordic Journal for Artistic Research) Issue 10, is open until 29th November 2022. The theme is “Circulating Practices” and the editors are Cecilia Roos and Gunhild Mathea Husvik-Olaussen. 
 
In artistic research collaborations unexpected and unimagined encounters may occur. For Issue 10, VIS is especially looking for artistic collaborations where dramaturgy, and the perception of temporalities, has been explored through the sharing of research practices and methods. The Nantes Saint-Nazaire School of Fine Arts, the Nantes Institute of Advanced Studies, the Lieu Unique and Nantes Métropole are launching a new chair in "Arts, Society and Contemporary Change".

Starting in January 2023, an international professional artist from the field of visual arts from the South (Africa, Central or South America, Asia, the Middle East, Oceania) will be hosted for a 6-month stay in Nantes.

The aim of this residency is to cross-reference contemporary changes through the arts and the human and social sciences. It intends to explore societal changes and the place of Man in this environment through the crossing of disciplines.

This chair will bring together the know-how, equipment, networks and missions of each institution to serve the world of arts and ideas in the metropolitan area.

The National University of the Arts in Bucharest, through the Doctoral school, is collaborating with other art schools from Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Portugal and Poland in building up a journal dedicated to arts, culture and design.

The DAC (Design, Art, Culture) journal invites submissions for the 2022 issue, “Image and Memory”. DAC call is open to visual artists and theorists, art historians, as well as anthropologists and archaeologists, asking for papers, research projects, artworks/ portfolios, or book reviews on the subject of “image and memory”. Contribute with essays (both textual and visual) thematising various aspects regarding the mnemonic, individual and collective memories. Submit your paper through the call link here.

IED - Istituto Europeo di Design presents two editions of the Master of Arts (Second Level Academic Diploma) in Transdisciplinary Design: one in Milan and one in Turin. Research and experimentation are the key elements in both courses, designed with the same approach and philosophy and developing two different focuses in each of the cities where it is offered. The theme of the future of mobility is the focus of Turin’s edition, while the theme of the evolving cities is the focus of Milan’s edition.

The Master of Arts (Second Level Academic Diploma) in Transdisciplinary Design, is a two-year course offering to participants the experimentation of new ways to conceive and put in practice the relation between design and society.

How to apply

To apply for an IED Master of Arts (awarding a Second Level Academic Diploma) , candidates must hold an Undergraduate Degree.

After being assigned to an Admission Advisor, access to a reserved area is granted and the admission process begins. The admission process consists of:

• Evaluation of academic record and motivation letter

• Language test (for candidates applying for a course taught in a language other than their mother tongue and who do not have a language certificate).

The Faculty of Arts and Design, West University of Timisoara and the Center for Curatorial Research, Art History and Criticism, Heritage Studies (CICASP) welcome proposals for the International Conference NATURE – ARTS interconnections, held from 2 - 4 November 2022.

The conference is open to researchers and visual artists who work on the ways in which nature in its various forms is present in visual arts. Nature has always been in the attention of artists, offering subjects for portrayal at the time when arts were mainly representational, providing a model for creation, being a source of inspiration, or standing as a value to be defended and protected against the nowadays global threats such as pollution or global warming. Deeply admired or thoroughly investigated, in the same time appropriated and transfigured in the act of creation, nature is today as relevant as always for visual arts.

The conference aims at looking at the multiplicity of ways in which artists involved nature in the artistic processes and their works. Possible topics could include: experimental creative researching natural or urban landscape, artist’s relationship with nature through interventions such as land art, scenarios of nature’s ruin and interpretations from an ecological perspective.

Papers presenting theoretical research results and presentations of artistic research are equally welcome.

The Conference language is English, and there is no conference fee.

The Steering Committee of the European Students’ Union’s (ESU) Quality Assurance (QA) Student Experts’ Pool hereby opens a call for 90 members for the membership term 2022/2023. All applications must be submitted until 15th of May, 2022 at 23:59 CEST, by filling out the following application form and uploading the necessary documents.

The ESU’s Quality Assurance Student Experts Pool has been established to promote student engagement in quality assurance and to contribute to the improvement of higher education provision in the European Higher Education Area. It aims to develop ESU as a crucial partner for quality assurance agencies in Europe and to play a leading role in quality assurance policy developments.

For these purposes, members of the pool are trained and can be nominated to participate in quality assurance procedures e.g. reviews, thus promoting student participation in quality assurance processes across Europe. Through the pool, ESU also undertakes capacity-building and development activities in quality assurance in higher education on the national level, in cooperation with the National Students’ Union members of ESU.

The call for VIS – Nordic Journal for Artistic Research issue 9 is open between 20 April and 1 June 2022. The theme is “Of Memory and Public Space” and editors are Serge von Arx and Eliot Moleba.

They are interested in the artistic practices of researchers, artists and architects, whose work is both celebrating and questioning the role of art in dealing with collective memory. How can and does artistic work help us to reflect, identify and reveal our society and add meaning to our cities? How can interception in the public sphere trigger a response in the form of an action or a movement for us to relate and engage with the histori(es) and memori(es) embedded within public spaces? In other words, what is it that we decide to remember, what do we ignore and what do we choose to forget?

In the immense atmosphere, I breathe the air of my house, my garden, my street, my city. What does each of us breathe? The context of his life: his objects, his spaces, the products of human activities. The quality of the air lies in the materiality of our environments, it is sensitive, the development of our perceptual capacity and its recognition.

The “Respire” symposium proposes to:
• take an interest in new ways of knowing the air we breathe and developing a sensitive culture of the qualities of the air;
• to present projects exploring ways to reconnect with a sensory perception of air.

Organised around three axes, the symposium will examine the relationship between measuring instruments and sensory perception, somatic and artistic research on breathing, research on "breathing" materials and atmospheric design and architecture projects.

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts is organising a 3-day digital conference on 20-22 January, 2022: Harnessing a 21st Century approach to Performing Arts: Technology, Practice, Education and Research

Under the pandemic, performing arts universities and conservatoires are taking on a proactive and agile approach in shifting into newer modes of teaching and learning. They have to generate innovative strategies and insights to overcome the new challenges and take into consideration the role of technology in reshaping performing arts. 

This conference is bringing together global leaders and academics in the field to explore creative innovations in performing arts and share pedagogical practices, while providing a platform for performing artists, educators, practitioners, researchers and students to discuss the way forward in enriching performing arts education, showcase their works and exchange ideas.

The French Institute of Greece launches a call for applications for its research residency program on contemporary ceramics at the House of France in Rhodes.

The House of France in Rhodes is located in the medieval heart of the city of Rhodes. It welcomed knights who were passing through the island. In 1912, the House was bought by a French ambassador in Turkey who offered it to the French state. Today it hosts the Consular Agency of France.

Today the local production disappears in favor of copies of ceramics from Iznik or Ikaros. The tradition remains but the renewal of generations and the transmission of know-how are threatened. Local authorities are invested to preserve and valorize this intangible heritage; The French Ambassy brings its support.

This program encourages the crossover between the existing cultural heritage and the contemporary issues of ceramic art. The residency aims to offer to the artists a field of creation and experimentation in connection with the historical environment and the discovery of traditional know-how.

The three selected artists invited to Rhodes for a two-month residency are expected to establish working relationships between them, with the island's artistic circles as well as with local craftsmen.

The elaboration of ceramic works will be punctuated by learning traditional techniques from masters and artists and by meetings with local craftsmen.

This residency also aims to create links with contemporary artists from Rhodes. The invited artists will benefit from an artistic local network.

This residency program is addressed to artists, Greek and French artists as well as artists of the Mediterranean countries who wish to develop an artistic research project on contemporary ceramics.

Final selection and announcement of results: 30th June 2021

The special edition of Message Journal aims to capture, investigate, interrogate and illuminate how COVID-19 and measures such as lockdown, isolation and social distancing, et al, may have impacted not only on Graphic Communication Designers, Illustrators, et al personally, but also on their practice and thoughts about the role of Graphic Communication Design. This research aims to reveal what, how and if the current circumstances have initiated any new or alternative perspectives, approaches and insights through visual expressions.

Therefore, they ask: with what, why, and how have you responded through Graphic Communication Design during the pandemic and what has unfolded? How in this time of crisis have you, and we as a community, taken time to help ourselves and our health, in order to support ourselves and others to become more resilient?

Message are also looking to capture a varied mix of visual insights, anecdotes, praise or critiques relating to how the crisis has been addressed. Personally, locally, nationally and/or globally.

During 2020/21 individuals have found themselves isolated in their homes and through social distancing. You may be working from home, been furloughed or made redundant. Often in challenging situations individuals may respond and seek solace through “making” and using their creativity. So, you are invited to share your experiences, thoughts and reflections during this time and the future.

Message welcomes contributions from anyone involved in creating visual communications. Submit your image(s) with a short exposition of up to 300 words (this may also include links to the work submitted). It is asked that all of the above fits into an A3 pdf. Theatre Faculty of Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno is pleased to invite you to the Theatre Conference JAMU 2021. This year´s topic is The Ever-expanding Horizons of Theatre.

The conference will be held on 25-27 November 2021 in Brno, Czech Republic, if need be the conference will have either hybrid or online format.

The conference provides a platform on which different concepts of research in the field of theatre practice and theory can be contrasted. The event has been attended by over one hundred professional artists, researchers and doctoral students from Europe, Africa, North as well as South America and Asia who have come to Brno to introduce their research in progress to an international audience and discuss common methodological issues.

This year they would like to examine the ever-expanding and changing horizons of theatre as well as theatre research. In 2020, the idea of theatre outside the designated theatre building is nothing new, yet the academic viewpoint tends to focus on the purely dramaturgical and directional matters of such projects. Being an academy of performing arts, they would like to examine this phenomenon not only from the perspective of the changing thematic focus, but also from the view of theatre management, light and sound technology, or stage design. During the conference, they would like to bridge theatre practitioners and academics and offer a think tank, where everyone can share their opinion on the theatre horizons. They invite doctoral students as well as experienced theatre-makers.

International contest/exhibition for young jewellery makers

Preziosa Young” is a biennial competition launched in 2008, dedicated to worldwide emerging artists, goldsmiths and designers. The aim is to contribute to the circulation of what is new in research jewellery, as well as showcase what the new generations of goldsmiths/designers/artists are “brewing”. Worldwide artists, goldsmiths, silversmiths, designers and young professionals are invited to present projects that illustrate the work in which they are currently involved.

Preziosa Young is an excellent opportunity for young designers/artists/goldsmiths to present their research, and have the possibility to stay in Florence for three months as artists in residence. The contest provides a high level of quality, both conceptual and technical. The participants are young professionals, who already have their own activity and a demonstrable curriculum. Read the call for application for more information.

The winners' exhibition will first be presented in Florence on the occasion of Florence Jewellery Week 2022 (program under development), and then in other countries and galleries, during the following months.

In accordance with Preziosa Young policy of supporting the new generations, candidates to the contest do not have to pay any registration or participation fees.

The ShUM Sites Speyer, Worms and Mainz has always been a place of Jewish cultural creativity and innovation. They would now like to take this up again. A first-time artist-in-residence program has been created, supported by the state and the three cities, which is international in its call for proposals. ShUM is offering up to three project fellowships for the realization of an artistic project that addresses the history of the ShUM communities and their religious, cultural and architectural legacy.

A public presentation of the completed projects (exhibition, concert, reading, performance, etc.) is intended.

Required is an artistic approach to the ShUM legacy, taking into consideration Judaism’s ideas, history and current position.

During their stay, the artistic ShUM fellows will also be expected to allow interested visitors an insight into their work and concepts in a suitable form, e.g., in workshop discussions. Young people and schools will also be invited, and an exchange of ideas with local artists and cultural institutions is also desirable.

Events linked to the fellowship are organized in collaboration with the curator and artistic director of the residency program.

AR / Architecture Research is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published yearly by the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture. AR is a critical platform for research and explorative writing at the highest level of creative scholarship.
