TYPE OF MEMBERSHIPELIA offers four membership categories. Regular members are higher education institutions that provide advanced degree or degree equivalent diplomas recognised at the highest professional level by their national authority in any artistic discipline. Non-European members are institutions outside of Europe (following the Council of Europe definition) that otherwise fulfil the criteria of ordinary full membership. Non-European members have all rights equal to regular Members, except the right to vote at the General Assembly. At the General Assembly in 2020, the members voted on an amendment of these rights for Non-European institutions. Associates are organisations not fulfilling the requirements for a full membership or natural as well as legal persons. Normally, Associates members are vocational or professional schools without a recognised degree, bodies active in higher education, research and arts at national or international level. This is an opportunity for organisations committed to the same goals as ELIA to benefit from ELIA's membership services and benefits. Supporting members are institutions that have been approved as members and want to support ELIA’s work with a higher contribution above their regular yearly fee. These generous donations are designated for the development of ELIA initiatives and projects, with a specific focus on the field of artistic research and student activities.
In 2023 ELIA introduced its Global Entity Membership offer. This membership subscription serves Higher Arts Education (HAE) institutions that qualify as Full Members (European or Non-European) and run multiple campuses across different cities within the same country or internationally. The pricing structure for Global Entity Membership is determined by the number of subsidiary entities run by the HAE institution. For more information, contact the membership team. HOW TO APPLYApplicants need to submit a request though the ELIA system, which requires to select the appropriate membership type, certify the student category and degrees provided by the institution. The ELIA team will contact the main reference person who has submitted the application to confirm and verify these details, when necessary. By selecting the country of the applicant and the student number, the system automatically applies the correct membership fee, with the exception of the Associate members. Institutions that fulfil the requirements of the regular membership, may not apply as associates. The membership application is reviewed by the Executive Group on behalf of the Representative Board. After the final decision, the applicant main contact person provided receives its confirmation letter and yearly invoice. To get the best out of the ELIA membership, it is required that the main contact person provides other relevant contacts into the institution or shares this information with the ELIA team. It is the responsibility of the member to update the member profile or inform the office about changes in the institution (name, logo, contacts, address, etcetera). By submitting an application, the member agrees with the membership terms and conditions, which are as well stated in the ELIA Statutes. APPLY HERE PRICINGValuing openness, inclusivity and equal opportunity, ELIA strives to offer members a welcoming space which encourages active engagement and knowledge exchange, regardless of the institution' size and independently of their national economic situation. ELIA's fee scale is based on two main variables: the number of students in the arts enrolled within the institution, and the strength of the national economy in which the institution is based. For regular and non-European members, the country categories apply and relate to related to the gross national income based on the purchasing power of each member country (GNI per capita). To guarantee the fair placement of countries in income-based categories, these categories consider the average GNI for the past three years (2019-2020-2021) instead of a single year reference (as in some cases, fluctuation can have a significant impact). This new pricing system was presented at the General Assembly which took place in November 2020 and is implemented since 1 January 2021. As per the approved Membership Fee System, an inflation correction will be applied to ELIA membership fees per 1 January of every year based on the Dutch national consumer price index ‘alle bestedingen’. This decision will be taken annually by the Executive Group at the time of budget consideration (second part of the year prior to the budget year) on the basis of a proposal by the Executive Director, using the index for the most recent completed calendar year prior to decision making. The Executive Group may decide in any given year, for reasons given, to refrain from implementing the inflation correction. No exceptions for individual member institutions will be made. Associate membership has a flat fee. ![]()
All membership fees listed here above are based on the calendar year. The ELIA membership automatically renews, unless the member informs the ELIA team accordingly to the membership terms and conditions, which are agreed with the application submission, and can be found in the ELIA Statutes.
