Images of Air and Light. A Transdisciplinary Encounter		18/11/2020	18/11/2020	14:00	15:00	18/11/2020 14:00 - 15:00 Presenter: Florian Dombois How to share across disciplines? In this session, presenters explore the transfer from not-yet art and not-yet science to disciplinary output in art or science, taking film footage, that is produced in the ZHdK wind tunnel as an example of proto-disciplinary material, that is transformed and articulated in either proto- or disciplinary formats. The transdisciplinary research project Luftbilder/Lichtbilder (Images of Air and Light) looks at the moving picture as an epistemic medium and examines it with reference to the history of media and science, also taking in artistic and technical aspects. “Scientific” moving pictures are taken to mean films created by researchers to allow their peers to analyse processes of motion and, in their capacity as inscriptions (Latour/Woolgar), to perform an epistemic role. One of the ideas put forward by the project is that we are in the middle of an upheaval of media systems to which the established scientific publication channels have not yet responded in an adequate fashion.

Using methods of juxtaposition and suspension and a shared cardboard ‘table’, the relative motion between two positions will explore the value of images in encouraging an open/suspended attitude in a transdisciplinary dialogue.
The Face of Poverty: A theatrical intervention in the field of social studies		18/11/2020	18/11/2020	14:00	15:00	18/11/2020 14:00 - 15:00 Presenter: Margarite Smit Through livestream presenters will play out an excerpt of an intervention they are developing during a course Theatergames and interventions. Students will set up ‘real life’ scenes built around scarcity and poverty. Every viewer will be given a perspective of a ’player’ from which he/she will participate in the prototype. Afterwards there will be a debate around the question *‘How can theatre be applied to the framework of a professional social worker and be helpful in opening up themes such as poverty and scarcity in society?’*

More than a solution to overcome restrictions on travel and physical meetings: understand the affordances of the network and you will discover new creative possibilities that span the realities. Ian will present projects from his networked performance arts practice and share experiences in the use of digital networks in arts education at FHK, Tilburg. A live performance - involving arts students and the ELIA conference audience in a networked virtual environment - will complete the presentation.

What can art and design contribute to a new way of thinking about resources and sustainability in an educational context? Can they offer a different perspective on current problems? Is it possible to implement ecological questions into all school subjects — or do we need a new transdisciplinary subject dealing with being in the world, with life-worlds, deglobalisation or, as Latour puts it, the terrestrial? How can a university of art and design prepare its students — especially those who will become teachers — for these challenges? Can art and design turn schools into a training ground for invention, experimentation and imagination? The workshop circles around these questions and promotes a material-based art education that connects sensitivity, knowledge and aesthetics.
Trans-European Mobile Academy (TEMA)		18/11/2020	20/11/2020	16:30	12:30	18/11/2020 16:30 - 20/11/2020 12:30 Presenter: Michelle Teran What can this moment of the pandemic teach about the world we live in and the fields we teach? This presentation was initially envisioned as an introduction to the TEMA project. TEMA is a learning project at the intersection of socially engaged art, pedagogy, and community engagement. Placed within the so-called social practices, community art, site/context-specific, and relational aesthetics, TEMA aims to actively involve communities and social actors with a grounded, participatory and collaborative approach towards a commonality/ community of learning. It proposes a mobile academy of different learning stations with local hosts, bringing together a complementary set of pedagogies, including education experiments, agroecology and environmental perspectives, multicultural and translingual sensibilities, activism, curatorial, and socially engaged artistic practices. In these moments where it becomes difficult, if not risky, to come together, with mobility problematic, we need to find ways for moments of togetherness; to develop artistic practices that address this need. This workshop proposes an introductory lecture, a collective experiment, and a ritual. It starts at the beginning of the ELIA Biennial Conference and ends with its conclusion.

Creating Transdisciplinary Stories		19/11/2020	19/11/2020	11:00	12:30	19/11/2020 11:00 - 12:30 Presenter: Silke Lange, Mark Ingham Critiquing established ideas of disciplinary quality, this 'walkshop' invites participants to explore how transdisciplinary conversations can enable us to reimagine and reinvent communities as collective knowledge producers. Drawing on theories of liberating knowledge we challenge conventional ideas of transdisciplinarity in action. Participants working and walking in virtual transdisciplinary pairs, will form conversations in conjunction with digitally connected students from the host institution and University of the Arts London. These tripartite discussions, along with images and sounds collected during the 'walkshop', will be recorded using mobile phones and uploaded to the collaborative application Padlet.

Urgent Classroom. Art Education in times of wasteocene		19/11/2020	19/11/2020	11:00	12:30	19/11/2020 11:00 - 12:30 Presenter: Wiktoria Furrer, Silvia Henke In times of ecological crisis, we would like to re-invent art education and therefore propose to establish «Urgent Classrooms». Despite scientific certainty about climate change, there is still a hindering lack of consciousness and action. The swiss Lehrplan 21 demands «education for sustainable development» without designating a specific school subject. Especially artistic practices have the capacity to make mental structures and implicit habits visible and to alterate them. Therefore, we are looking for new disciplinary alliances between art, MINT sciences, teaching and activism in order to unleash an undisciplined, fearless thinking about crisis. At the conference, participants will be engaged the in a digital “urgent classroom” consisting of participative exercises and methods for art teaching.

Idiosynkrasia: The Nexus of Textile and Sound		19/11/2020	19/11/2020	14:00	15:00	19/11/2020 14:00 - 15:00 Presenter: Gertrud Fischbacher, Marius Schebella The sense of hearing is evolutionary quite close to the sense of touch with its mechanical receptors. Thinking of textiles, we envision colors, prints, fashion, etc., but textiles have a haptic quality, an olfactory and gustatory side, they have an acoustic quality as well. Sound is considered as a temporal art form, time-based. But actually, it has a lot of physicality in it. Sound permeates objects and rooms. In this project presenters tried to connect textile and auditory art practice that are not primarily related to vision. Find aspects that combine the two worlds and look from the different side of the world at each art form.

An audience discussion about the position of institutions in society, and their instituting practices as artistic practices will follow.
Sit With Me		19/11/2020	19/11/2020	14:00	15:00	19/11/2020 14:00 - 15:00 Presenter: Electa Behrens Welcome to being the co-creator of a 10 minute performance in which listening is explored as a gateway to transdisciplinarity on the inner and inter-human scale. It is a one-to-one event with after-talk in plenum. This research draws on Drever’s notions of aural diversity – the idea that we all hear the world differently. It investigates listening as process which is hybrid and dynamic and proposes listening as a dramaturgical process which opens for audience agency, identity creation and fantasy. Using Design Charrettes to Foster International Cross-Institute Interdisciplinary Practice and Collaboration		19/11/2020	20/11/2020	11:00	17:30	19/11/2020 11:00 - 20/11/2020 17:30 Presenter: Clyde Doyle The MA Design for Change from IADT , Dublin, Ireland, will run a one day design research workshop facilitated by their MA students – participants will be assigned to teams lead by the MA candidates, each researching a specific theme using design tools provided. The themes are to be determined through the first term of the new MA term in September/October 2020, but will broadly address social justice; migration, decolonisation, and equality. Crucially there will be a focus on local research conducted by participants in their own communities and contexts which can then be synthesised and presented in a global context.
ReThink: Before Act		19/11/2020	19/11/2020	16:30	17:30	19/11/2020 16:30 - 17:30 Presenter: Celia Quico Drawing into one of the main topics of the European project “Rethink: Before Act”, this workshop organisers will ask students involvement in reflecting and creating artefacts which can raise awareness about the need to identify and debunk conspiracy theories. The workshop would pick-up on the experience of producing the video “What Is a Conspiracy Theory?”, which involved professors and students from Cinema, Visual Arts and Animation from Universidade Lusófona. For this workshop, the team would also invite fellow colleagues from other European universities. Preparatory work towards the workshop can include a quick & dirty qualitative survey on the topic of conspiracy theories, plus the elaboration of calls-to-action about conspiracy theories and, also, drafts for posters and storyboards for videos.
Weather: Underground / Overkill		19/11/2020	19/11/2020	16:30	17:30	19/11/2020 16:30 - 17:30 Presenter: Simone Fehlinger, Tiphaine Kazi-Tani, Mathieu Heyraud The Deep Design Lab (Cité du design-ESADSE / Ecole urbaine de Lyon) explores the material practices and visual representations that condition the actual space of the Anthropocene. Tiphaine Kazi-Tani and Simone Fehlinger — teaming up with choreographer Mathieu Heyraud (Le Magasin - Laboratoire de permanence chorégraphique) and ESADSE students-researchers — will renew their TEXT BATTLE experience. TEXT BATTLE is an ongoing experimentation on assembling narrative tools for design research. This session will explore videoconferencing as a contemporary space of performance and a metatool to deconstruct some mediatic productions, here the weather report. Recommended for students to join. There will be active participation possible already before the conference. From 10 to 13 November, students will be able to join an open channel of the TEXT BATTLE workshop to actively experience it.

The workshop displays ideas on how to implement such practices in arts and design education, and asks whether art universities can thus contribute to ecological, social, and cultural challenges of the future.
Parnassus: Collaboratively Shaping Interdisciplinary Creations		20/11/2020	20/11/2020	11:00	12:30	20/11/2020 11:00 - 12:30 Presenter: Lies Colman, Jeroen Malaise Students of all artistic disciplines are constantly being challenged to collaborate and to be creative: to come out of their comfort zone without losing their artistic quality. An ambitious goal but a challenge in the classroom: where do you start, where do you end? In this interactive presentation / workshop, we want to show one possible methodology of building a common vocabulary by well-defined exercises and improvisations, thinking associatively instead of vertically, and extrapolating ideas to transdisciplinary artistic products. We will give the word and the floor to students about their challenges and learning moments, and want to make this an online experiment, breaking into small groups with a specific assignment and a final presentation and discussion.

The Risky Business of Cross-Discipline Collaborative Curriculum Design		20/11/2020	20/11/2020	14:00	15:00	20/11/2020 14:00 - 15:00 Presenter: Kerry Gough, Justine Davidson Join this session and participate in a curriculum design sprint to redesign an aspect of your curriculum to include opportunities for collaboration, risk-taking and failure. The School of Art & Design at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) has recently undergone a curriculum design sprint process to develop their whole-School curriculum to embrace the principles of collaboration, risk-taking, and learning from failure. Formatively assessed as a cross-School collaboration experience at Level 4, at Level 5 they embedded this as a compulsory 20 credit assessed CoLab module, while Level 6 culminates in a capstone project that embeds collaboration and teamwork as an assessed learning outcome. Our session shares the process and outputs for whole-School cross-curriculum change.

Join this session/performance and contribute to the exploration of a new paradigm of education and research with its distinctive protocols, principles and validation procedures. You will become be part of the Try Out sequels which started in 2015. You are invited to send two curiosities (object, thing, sound, image, motion, thought, etcetera) to Groningen and Zurich.

The presentation is based on presenter’s current artistic research which explores tangible ways of expanding practices of participation in performance and education both inside and outside of the walls of performing art schools. Connecting performance-making to the limits and potentials of individual and collective social imagination, the workshop performance aims to raise the question: What can happen here? Between these people, in this conference, encountering each other online, within this institutional setting, and in others like it? And what's at stake?
Immersive Lab Exhibition walk-through		20/11/2020	20/11/2020	16:30	17:00	20/11/2020 16:30 - 17:00 Presenter: Adnan Hadzi Lost in a garden of clouds is a virtual exhibition that extends the digital program of AMRO20 “Of Whirlpools and Tornadoes”. As the festival moved online, also the planned show had to be made accessible remotely and this initiated an exciting process of transformation for both the exhibition format and many of the artworks in it. This is part two of the session Immersive Lab. The participants will be able to walk through an online exhibition.
