Announcing ELIA New European Bauhaus Partnership

Friday 19 March 2021

ELIA is excited to announce its official partnership with the European Commission’s New European Bauhaus Initiative! We look forward to a fruitful collaboration involving ELIA members, their students, and partner networks in conversations on the reimagining of the lived space as inclusive, accessible, and sustainable—a place for enriching cultural experiences.

As part of our New European Bauhaus (NEB) activities, co-organised with Berlin University of the Arts, we will set the stage for students to make their voices heard. We are initiating a pan-European, interdisciplinary dialogue about the role and responsibilities of Higher Education in Art and Design and the field’s contribution to envisioned systematic change.

With this in mind, we are organising a series of (small-scale) interactive digital events to outline a dynamic blueprint for the requirements of a responsible and sustainable educational practice within art and design. Students are the agents of this transformative integration—they will drive new approaches, provide critical inspection, and render the inclusive, affordable, and sustainable future tangible.

ELIA is also part of the New European Bauhaus Collective (NEBC), a group of pan-European organisations and networks. The NEBC has been selected as official partner of the New European Bauhaus Initiative as well. With NEBC we will be introducing more conversations around New European Bauhaus topics and will look together for connections and synergies between different fields and decision makers. A joint conference is planned on 29 April 2021.

ELIA has closely followed the development around this European initiative from the start. With the organisations involved in NEBC, ELIA published a statement ‘The New European Bauhaus: Making the Renovation Wave a Cultural Project’, and our February Advocacy and Funding Update featured an article on what opportunities higher arts education institutes can expect from the New European Bauhaus.
