ELIA has joined other higher education and cultural networks in signing an urgent letter of appeal. The letter has been created by Scholars at Risk Network who work on behalf of scholars and academics to protect the freedom to think, question and share ideas. It calls on European governments and EU institutions to take immediate action to secure the lives and careers of Afghanistan’s scholars, students and civil society actors.

It seeks immediate action to:

• Continue evacuation flights

• Increase resettlement quotas

• Create expedited complementary legal pathways

• Waive any intent-to-return and home residency requirements that may apply to visa applications

• Establish a dedicated EU fellowship scheme and national fellowships.

Read this letter of appeal here and consider what your institution could do to help fellow scholars in need.
