SHIFT Interview Series on Inclusion

Monday 15 November 2021

Sandra Booth and Maria Hansen (ELIA) during a SHIFT interview on inclusion via zoom.

As part of the SHIFT interview series on inclusion Maria Hansen, Executive Director ELIA, interviewed Sandra Booth, Director of Policy and External Relations at CHEAD, the Council for Higher Education in Art & Design. Recognising the urgency of tackling systemic racism, CHEAD, a UK based network, decided to partner with trusted and valued expert organisations on their journey to equity, diversity, and inclusivity.

In the UK, as in many other countries in Europe, students of art, media and creative design are overwhelmingly white. Sandra Booth, Director of Policy and External Relations at CHEAD is very aware of this issue. Starting where CHEAD could have most impact, they started to develop an anti-racist framework for their institution, and provide assistance and resources for their members. In order to do so CHEAD cooperated with three other organisations: Shades of Noir, FACE fashion academics creating equality and NSEDAD, the National Society for Education, Art and Design

“So it’s that balance between doing things that are practically of help now, but in a very informed and conscientious way, whilst continuing our journey to develop our anti-racist practice strategically, and operationally.”
