The history of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow dates back to 1818. It is the oldest university of its type in Poland, with over two hundred years of tradition, which places it in the elite group of the oldest art schools in Europe. From the beginning of its existence, the university used European influences and had an impact on shaping trends in art. For over two centuries of activity, it created the canon of artistic education in Poland. Among the graduates and lecturers of the Academy of Fine Arts were and are the most outstanding Polish artists. Currently, the structure of the Academy consists of seven faculties, dealing with various aspects of art, design and conservation. These are the faculties of: - Interior Architecture
- Industrial Forms
- Graphics
- Intermedia
- Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art
- Painting and Sculpture.
The university also operates a Doctoral School and a number of inter-faculty units. In total, about 1000 students study here, and classes are conducted by about 300 lecturers. Therefore, despite its relatively small size – compared to other universities – the Academy of Fine Arts is an organization with a high degree of internal diversity, covering a vast area of artistic, design and conservation creation.
