ELIA Community Supports Urgent Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeals for Emergency Aid

Friday 17 February 2023

The ELIA community is deeply saddened by the tragic situation in Turkey and Syria as a result of the recent earthquake.

Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless after an earthquake and aftershocks devastated parts of southeast Turkey and northwest Syria. The area is inhabited by more than 13 million people. Over 33,000 people are known to have lost their lives. The UN expects the number of deaths to double as rescue efforts continue.

We extend our condolences and our support to all those affected, especially to our members Bilkent University, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture located in Ankara, and Maltepe University located in Istanbul. Both arts education institutions have students and staff from the affected areas.

As our members and their students mobilise to support the recovery effort and to provide care to affected staff and students, we encourage those organisers of aid campaigns, fundraising events, and relief to get in touch so we can amplify your activities and actions throughout our network.

Global organisations such as Red Cross, UNICEF, Oxfam International are currently accepting donations.
