Janpier Brands from Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam and Codarts Rotterdam University of the Arts, who is also involved in the development of Cultuur&Campus Putselaan (of which ELIA is a partner), reports back from the ELIA Leadership Symposium 2023. 

 

From 18-20 October 2023, at the ELIA Leadership Symposium in Manchester about 70 art academies discussed the topic, 'How should art academies act in a world that seems to be changing faster than ever?'

 

They explored current developments, such as the rise of AI and the feeling of ongoing crises (Covid-19 and global violence), were interpreted and linked to the responsibility of art academies to put this on the agenda. The same applied to themes that have been on the agenda for some time, such as the accessibility of art education, the position of the art academy in society, and the ability of the academies to respond to artistic, social, economic and technological developments in their study programmes.
