Query to ELIA members Regarding Artistic Research Protocols

Thursday 21 December 2023

Prof. Rebecca Duclos, visiting faculty member at the Estonian Academy of Arts, affiliated and representing Concordia University, Faculty of Fine Arts in Montréal Canada in the ELIA Representative Board is kindly seeking insights from ELIA colleagues regarding Doctoral programmes in artistic research.

The specific focus of this inquiry is to find examples and precedents for dual-authored doctoral written theses. At Concordia University, there is what is called a “research-creation PhD” that allows for a combination of artistic and written work to be submitting for adjudication at the PhD level. Typically, a single artist submits a lengthy written dissertation and defends a major artistic work. Now, there is an artistic DUO of long-time collaborators who would like to be adjudicated as a single artistic entity submitted co-authored written and studio work.

Prof. Duclos is looking to collect instances where a collaborative of two (or more) artists have submitted a single co-authored dissertation accompanying their collaborative artistic studio production. Do you have a provision for this at your institution?

Your assistance and valuable insights on this matter would be highly appreciated.

You may reach Rebecca Duclos directly at rebecca.duclos@artun.ee or on WhatsApp at +372 5367 0190.
