Introducing the Artistic Research Alliance & Our First Official Statement

Thursday 3 October 2024

ELIA is excited to share an important development with you: the launch of the Artistic Research Alliance and our first official statement, titled “Leveraging the Full Potential of Artistic Research”.

The Artistic Research Alliance represents a unified effort to advocate for artistic research (AR) at both European and international levels.

The Alliance stands for the field of artistic research in all its diversity. This includes academic institutions as well as independent research actors, and research in all art practice disciplines (including architecture, design, film, photography, fine art, media and digital arts, music and the performing arts, creative writing, circus, as well as transdisciplinary efforts).

During its meeting in Vienna on 27 September 2024, the alliance reiterated the importance of collective action on key policy and funding frameworks, building on foundational documents that continue to be relevant today: The Vienna Declaration on Artistic Research (2020), The “Florence Principles” on the Doctorate in the Arts (2016), and Proposed Changes to the Frascati Manual (2022). Through regular knowledge exchange, the partners will develop and implement a shared advocacy strategy. This will include joint campaigns, policy papers, representation in stakeholder consultations and participation in interdisciplinary forums for policy and discourse development.

Through this statement, the Artistic Research Alliance seeks to elevate the field of artistic research, expand its influence, and continue advocating for its recognition and integration into policy, education, and innovation frameworks.

We invite you to read the full statement here and join us in advocating for the future of artistic research.

'The establishment of the Artistic Research Alliance proves that the key organisations in the art education and culture field in Europe and beyond see a need for a common advocacy strategy to secure and promote artistic research. This is in itself a proof of the organisations’ capacity to collaborate and join efforts for a research practice that still needs acknowledgement as key knowledge base for art education and at the same time can offer so much to society and its challenges.'

━ Jørn Mortensen, Vice President of ELIA and Chair of ELIA's Artistic Research Working Group

'It is of great strategic importance to ELIA to be part of this Artistic Research Alliance, thereby representing our almost 300 member institutions in their advocacy for artistic research at the international and national level.'

━ Maria Hansen, ELIA Executive Director
