Memories from Milan

Tuesday 10 December 2024

ELIA Executive Director, Maria Hansen reflects on the success of the ELIA Biennial in Milan, celebrating record attendance, the election of new board members, and the approval of the new ELIA Strategy as we approach the end of the year.

It was wonderful to see so many of you in Milan at the ELIA Biennial 2024. With over 500 attendees, it was a record for ELIA—thank you for making it such a success. A special thanks to our generous hosts at NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti. Your feedback highlights the many unique Biennial experiences, influenced by the spread of venues across the city and the diverse sessions offered. A big shoutout to everyone who was involved in creating the content of the conference.

The General Assembly, with many members joining online, was a positive moment of connection. ELIA’s Vice President, Jørn Mortensen, deserves a special thanks for the musical interludes that brought calm to the room—guitar in hand all the way from Norway, even honouring online requests!

We celebrated the election of two new Representative Board members: Simone Pilon from Berklee Valencia and Alexander Damianisch from the University of Applied Arts Vienna. We also bid farewell to Magali Coué and Maren Schmohl, whose contributions after six years of service will be greatly missed.

Another milestone was the approval of ELIA’s new value statement and strategy, created with members through a participatory process of more than a year. Special thanks to Cecilia Roos, Kai Lehikoinen, and For Planet Strategy Lab for their inspiring contributions. This strategy, supported by our Creative Europe network funding grant, will guide us moving forward, and we are excited to continue these discussions with you.

As this newsletter reaches you, many of us are tackling end-of-year to-do lists. My plan is to prioritise and leave the rest for next year—we all need a brain break to make space for fresh ideas. After some rest during the holidays, do consider applying to our open calls for 2025 ELIA events

We wish you peaceful holidays and a bright new year from all of us at the ELIA Team!
