We are delighted to welcome our newest member: New Bulgarian University, Theatre Department.
Founded in 1991, the Theatre Department at New Bulgarian University has been a cornerstone of Bulgaria's cultural and educational landscape. Its mission underscores the importance of theatre as an integral part of the public system, aiming to preserve cultural memory, reinforce core values, and expand spiritual horizons. With a European orientation, the Department draws on the rich traditions of theatre knowledge while embracing innovative practices and methodologies to address the dynamic cultural and institutional changes of today.
The Department is deeply committed to inclusivity and accessibility in theatre and education, building interdisciplinary connections, and promoting contemporary research. It also advocates for independent and experimental performances, creating space for critical discourse and innovation within the performing arts. The Theatre Department's work extends beyond its national context, with involvement in European projects focusing on diversity, marginalised communities, and career opportunities for its students.
As a member of international networks, the Department actively broadens its global professional contacts and collaborations. This dedication to fostering international connections is complemented by a robust educational strategy, which equips students with the skills needed to thrive in the broad spectrum of contemporary performing arts. Students engage in dynamic, hands-on learning opportunities, including workshops, masterclasses, and participation in festivals and international projects, alongside performances at NBU’s University Theatre.
Connect with and learn more about the Theatre Department at NBU by visiting their website. We warmly welcome them to the ever-growing ELIA community, and we look forward to working together in the future!
