Wednesday 18 June 2025

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Andrew Laine as the new Dean of the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts, effective 2 July 2025.

Andrew Laine brings with him over 25 years of experience in technical direction, scenic design, and stage production, coupled with a strong academic background. A graduate of The University of Texas at Austin with a Master of Fine Arts, he has undergone extensive professional theatre training across the United States and most recently served as Professor at Temple University in Philadelphia. There, he was widely recognised for his innovative approach to technical theatre education and his dedication to mentoring future generations of production artists and stage managers.

In addition to his academic roles, Laine actively participates in regional theatre conferences and maintains strong industry partnerships. His work bridges traditional stagecraft with emerging technologies, enriching both student experience and artistic output. He also plays an influential role in curriculum development and the management of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Laine is a long-standing member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT), reflecting his commitment to international collaboration and continuous professional development.

HKAPA warmly welcomes Andrew Laine to Hong Kong and looks forward to a new chapter of innovation and excellence under his leadership.

All of us at ELIA wish him every success in his new role!
