ELIA ACADEMY 2023 HOMEPAGE
ELIA, academy, 2023, homepage, higher arts education, event, Evora, Portugal, exploring situatedness

Theme

ELIA Academy 2023 invited participants to situate themselves in the city of Évora. Explore the situatedness of this culture, heritage and place. Experience Portugal's Alentejo plain as a confluence of complex interwoven histories and artistic sensibilities. Bring your own perspectives and engage with this celebrated UNESCO World Heritage site as arts educators, students, practitioners and professionals. Reflect on how art is created now and how it is defining its value for the future. Take a moment to consider your place in time and space, and share what situatedness means to you.

ELIA Academy host, University of Évora, School of the Arts beckons you towards this unique hinterland which calls for contemplation, specific interpretations and responses. Here, participants adjusted to a particular form of slow living. Allowed themselves to decelerate and experience the landscape as education. Together, we aimed to explore new learnings that will inform our work environments, teaching practices, research and artistic investigations. Delegates took this opportunity at ELIA Academy 2023 to reflect on the past and present as we forge new futures together.

Thought lines:

  • Discover new ways of transforming artistic practices, research and education grounded in the theory of 'situatedness'.
  • Understand how we see and live in the world differently based on our past experiences and understanding of artistic, cultural and social contexts.
  • Advance arts education, and pave new ways to build its future digitally, equitably, and sustainably.
  • Define and promote sustainability in arts education.
  • Step away from the hectic pace of present-day life and boost your creativity and well-being while challenging the established principles of today's education structures.

Rui Horta

Horta began his dance studies at the age of seventeen at Gulbenkian Ballet. He studied, danced, and taught contemporary dance in New York, a city where he lived for ten years, having then returned to Portugal where he was a leading force in the development of a new generation of Portuguese dancers and choreographers. During his seven years with SOAP, he has created works that toured extensively all over the world at the most important theatres and festivals, such as the Joyce in New York, the Hebbel in Berlin, the Harbour Front in Toronto, and the Spiral Hall in Tokyo, which have presented and co-produced his work for over a decade. In 2000, Rui returned to Portugal (Montemor-o-Novo), where he established a cross-disciplinary research and resident centre, O Espaço do Tempo, in an old 16th-century monastery; today it is a main production art centre in his country. His pieces continue to tour internationally. Experience and learn from his practice.

Environmental sustainability

The ELIA Academy is aligned to the SHIFT Eco-Guidelines for Networks. By implementing these guidelines in collaboration with its partners, ELIA is working towards achieving eco-certification by the end of 2023.

ELIA and the School of the Arts, University of Évora, are aware that large international events can have a negative effect on the environment due to the number of participants who will be travelling, eating, and producing waste. In order to reduce the environmental impact of the ELIA Academy, ELIA and the School of the Arts, University of Évora, will make greener choices in the organisation of the ELIA Academy 2023 and will continue to engage with participants about this topic.

ELIA and the School of the Arts, University of Évora, consider sustainability a very important issue, so several steps have been taken to lower the Academy’s impact on the environment and climate:

  • ACCOMMODATION: Most recommended hotels are within walking distance from the venues.
  • TRAVEL: Participants are encouraged to travel by train or bus to Évora, if possible. Walking, cycling, or public transportation should be used for travel within Évora. The University of Évora has 300 conventional bicycles and 200 electric bicycles. A number of these bikes will be available for event participants to use.
  • FOOD & DRINKS: Local and seasonal catering will be provided at the event, and only tap water will be used. Wine will be provided by certified sustainable wine producers from the Alentejo region. Information about food and drink ingredients and their production will be shared with participants. We encourage participants to bring their own water bottle. Read more on Eating Sustainably in Évora, a conversation with Ana Telles, Dean of the School of the Arts, University of Évora and find out more information about the ingredients which will be used at the ELIA Academy 2023 in Évora here.
  • MATERIALS: Printed materials and giveaways will be kept to a minimum. Please let us know in the registration process whether you need a printed programme. Participants are encouraged to bring their own tote bag in which they can keep conference materials.
  • AWARENESS: To increase awareness about environmental sustainability, our sustainable actions will be communicated to our suppliers and partners. Before, during, and after the conference we will communicate and create dialogue with our participants to help us in co-creating a more sustainable event.

Host

The School of the Arts of the University of Évora is a dynamic structure committed to the development of creativity and innovation. Established as an autonomous organic unit in 2008, the School of the Arts has already come a long way. In fact, degrees in Theatre Studies, Music, and Visual Arts, to which Architecture would be added later, were projected and implemented at the University of Évora since the mid-1990s.

Through its formative offer in Architecture, Design, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts/Multimedia, the School of the Arts of the University of Évora strives to provide a continuous, systematised, and integrated learning process, preparing its students for the challenges of modern society, globalisation, and competitiveness. Its configuration, in terms of disciplines covered, is unique among Portuguese higher education institutions dedicated to the arts. Its faculty comprises some of the most renowned specialists in the artistic and scientific areas in which it operates; therefore, the school has affirmed its revered position in the past few years at the regional, national, and international levels.
