Student Engagement SessionsThis year, teachers are invited to bring students into interactive dialogues about transdisciplinarity. Collaborating with art schools from across the globe, a virtual think-tank will forge connections and generate fresh, collaborative thinking about the future of higher arts education. Trans-European Mobile Academy (TEMA)Michelle Teran, Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands Wednesday 18 November, 16:30 - 17:30 CET Friday 20 November, 11:00 - 12:30 CET What can this moment of the pandemic teach about the world we live in and the fields we teach? This presentation was initially envisioned as an introduction to the TEMA project. TEMA is a learning project at the intersection of socially engaged art, pedagogy, and community engagement. Placed within the so-called social practices, community art, site/context-specific, and relational aesthetics, TEMA aims to actively involve communities and social actors with a grounded, participatory and collaborative approach towards a commonality/ community of learning. It proposes a mobile academy of different learning stations with local hosts, bringing together a complementary set of pedagogies, including education experiments, agroecology and environmental perspectives, multicultural and translingual sensibilities, activism, curatorial, and socially engaged artistic practices. In these moments where it becomes difficult, if not risky, to come together, with mobility problematic, we need to find ways for moments of togetherness; to develop artistic practices that address this need. This workshop proposes an introductory lecture, a collective experiment, and a ritual. It starts at the beginning of the ELIA Biennial Conference and ends with its conclusion.

More than a solution to overcome restrictions on travel and physical meetings: understand the affordances of the network and you will discover new creative possibilities that span the realities. Ian will present projects from his networked performance arts practice and share experiences in the use of digital networks in arts education at FHK, Tilburg. How do schools react to ecological questions? What can art and design contribute to a new way of thinking about resources and sustainability in an educational context? Is it possible to implement ecological
questions into all school subjects — or do we need a new transdisciplinary approach? How can a university of art and design prepare its students — especially those who will become teachers — for these challenges?
This workshop circles around these questions promoting a material-based art education that connects sensitivity, knowledge and aesthetics. It takes into account the relation of nature to culture as well as the role of material and materiality
in the context of art education.
Before the actual session, each participant should choose a material or object from his or her region which tells something about the region’s particularity, its conflicts, its ecological challenges. This can be a certain raw material, a found
object, a handcrafted artefact or a particular industrial product. You should then upload a short video that shows the material or object being handled, in its original context or connected to an activity. In the workshop we’ll take a
closer look at the photos and videos, find connections, but also look at the original materials and objects. Different perspectives will open up a network of knowledge, associations, narrations and memories. (Also suitable for students

Using Design Charrettes to Foster International Cross-Institute Interdisciplinary Practice and Collaboration

The MA Design for Change from IADT , Dublin, Ireland, will run a one day design research workshop facilitated by their MA students – participants will be assigned to teams lead by the MA candidates, each researching a specific theme using
design tools provided. The themes are to be determined through the first term of the new MA term in September/October 2020, but will broadly address social justice; migration, decolonisation, and equality. Crucially there will be a
focus on local research conducted by participants in their own communities and contexts which can then be synthesised and presented in a global context.

Drawing into one of the main topics of the European project “Rethink: Before Act”, workshop organisers ask students to reflect and create artefacts which can raise awareness about the need to identify and debunk conspiracy theories. The
workshop pick-up from the experience of producing the video “What Is a Conspiracy Theory?”, which involved professors and students from Cinema, Visual Arts and Animation from Universidade Lusófona. For this workshop, the team also
invites fellow colleagues from other European universities. Preparatory work towards the workshop can include a quick & dirty qualitative survey on the topic of conspiracy theories, plus the elaboration of calls-to-action about
conspiracy theories and, also, drafts for posters and storyboards for videos.

The Deep Design Lab (Cité du design-ESADSE / Ecole urbaine de Lyon) explores the material practices and visual representations that condition the actual space of the Anthropocene. Tiphaine Kazi-Tani and Simone
Fehlinger — teaming up with choreographer Mathieu Heyraud (Le Magasin - Laboratoire de permanence chorégraphique) and ESADSE students-researchers — will renew their TEXT BATTLE experience. TEXT BATTLE is an ongoing experimentation on assembling
narrative tools for design research. This session will explore videoconferencing as a contemporary space of performance and a metatool to deconstruct some mediatic productions, here the weather report. Recommended for students to join. There
will be active participation possible already before the conference. From 10 to 13 November, students will be able to join an open channel of the TEXT BATTLE workshop to actively experience it.
Parnassus: Collaboratively shaping interdisciplinary creations

Students of all artistic disciplines are constantly being challenged to collaborate and to be creative: to come out of their comfort zone without losing their artistic quality. An ambitious goal but a challenge in the classroom: where
do you start, where do you end? In this interactive presentation / workshop, we want to show one possible methodology of building a common vocabulary by well-defined exercises and improvisations, thinking associatively instead of vertically,
and extrapolating ideas to transdisciplinary artistic products. We will give the word and the floor to students about their challenges and learning moments, and want to make this an online experiment, breaking into small groups with
a specific assignment and a final presentation and discussion.
Boundary Work: Exploring Transdisciplinary Education Combining Arts and Sciences

Collaborations between the arts and sciences explore, challenge, sidestep, and transgress boundaries between different forms of knowledge, diverse ways of proceeding, and distinct concepts and habitus. As we have seen in our work with the transdisciplinary Rotterdam Arts and Sciences Lab, such boundaries demarcate a dynamic, shared space of negotiation within which we can move and compose with the material, social, and conceptual concerns of disciplines, techniques, and methods. Our practice-led workshop will introduce and experiment with the compositional modes of verbal notation and scoring. We hope to collaboratively develop proposals and instructions for actions within arts and design education that mayenable us to confront the ecological, social, and cultural challenges we face in the present and future.
