What is the New European Bauhaus Initiative? New European Bauhaus is an initiative launched by the European Commission with the core purpose of creating a movement and platform for designing future ways of living. The initiative is centred around three pillars: sustainability, inclusivity and arts and culture. New European Bauhaus aims to be a co-created initiative, and as such is currently in its co-design phase. Organisations and individuals have multiple ways to get involved and are encouraged to contribute their ideas, best practice examples and identified challenges, or share related material through a dedicated online portal. Organisations that would like to get more deeply involved can also host conversations around the priority topics, or even apply to become official New European Bauhaus partner. The co-design phase will be closed by summer 2021, after which the delivery and dissemination phases will follow. Two strands of New European Bauhaus Prizes have been launched by the European Commission at the end of April. We can also expect calls for proposals for New European Bauhaus pilot projects, and likely also complementary initiatives and policy instruments. More information on the initiative can be found on the official website. ELIA’s partnership ELIA applied and was selected for official partnership with the New European Bauhaus initiative in March 2021. As partner ELIA is excited to be hosting and participating in conversations involving ELIA members, their students, and partner networks on the reimagining of the lived space as inclusive, accessible, and sustainable—a place for enriching cultural experiences. In collaboration with University of the Arts Berlin, ELIA created international student workshops titled ‘Agents of Transformation in Art and Design: Student Driven Conversations about the New European Bauhaus’. The first episode of this pilot project was held on 28 April and gathered in a lively conversation and reflection more than 30 students from seven institutions: Berlin University of the Arts, Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, School of the Arts of the University of Évora, St. Joost School of Art & Design, Willem de Kooning Academy and Zurich University of the Arts. The second episode was held on Friday 28 May, bringing together arts students and representatives of European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, initiator of the New European Bauhaus to discuss questions regarding sustainability, inclusivity, and aesthetics. The students presented their visions for a sustainable, inclusive, and aesthetic future and set the agenda for their input to the New European Bauhaus initiative. The series was concluded with a third episode, open to all, that hosted a student conversation with Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. The event was held on Tuesday 6 July. In spring 2022, the second cycle of Agents of Transfomartion will take place. The first conversation, will tackle global challenges such as climate change, sustainability, democratic resilience and social cohesion, held on Tuesday 21 April. New European Bauhaus Collective The New European Bauhaus Collective (NEBC) is a group of pan-European organisations and networks that ELIA is part of. NEBC first came together in 2020 to publish the statement ‘The New European Bauhaus: Making the Renovation Wave a Cultural Project’ . Since then, NEBC has also been selected as official partner of the New European Bauhaus Initiative. With this collective, ELIA will be introducing more conversations around New European Bauhaus topics, especially looking for connections and synergies between different fields and decision makers. On Thursday 29 April NEBC hosted ‘Common Ground: Making the Renovation Wave a Cultural Project’, an online conference about complementing the economic, social and environmental measures of the Renovation Wave strategy with an essential cultural dimension. By making the Renovation Wave a cultural project, through initiatives like New European Bauhaus, the European Commission initiates a fundamental shift, which can be a game-changer in the transition to a more sustainable economy and society. Recordings and materials from the conference are openly available online. The Report of the Online Conference is now published and publically available here.
