George Mačiūnas FLUXUS medicine kit
Student: Martyna Nevieraitė
2023

The idea behind this art project was to create the design of medicine boxes and instruction papers (that come inside the boxes) in the manner of FLUXUS. Fluxus was an international art movement that emerged in the 1960s in the USA, it was founded by George Mačiūnas, a Lithuanian-born American artist and designer.
George Mačiūnas endured a lot of health problems and illness in his life. The names on the medicine boxes that I created are the names of the medicine that he used (Morphine, Cortisone) or things in his life that helped him fight the illness (art, music, making performances). The front of the boxes also include short quotes of George Mačiūnas, illustrations of a body part or an organ that the medicine was used for or was used with and line graphics representing pain, inflammation, sound wave, etc. On the back of the boxes, instead of information about the medicine, there are FLUXUS performances. Our task was to find a creative way to display FLUXUS performances and letters of George Mačiūnas. The letters of George Mačiūnas were made into instruction papers (that are usually found in all medicine boxes) by me. The inspiration for the style was taken from FLUXUS manifesto and FLUXUS newspapers. The paper also includes small illustrations created by me, that reflect on what it is said in the text.
