DIGITALITY & NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Digital technology is evolving rapidly. Within months of the COVID-19 pandemic, institutions were adopting new and innovative online learning and teaching applications. As with other sectors, arts and higher arts education institutions are affected by the development of new technologies: artificial intelligence, digitalisation in all aspects of professional life, and the web-based pedagogical and dissemination platforms that are continually being introduced. We need to close the gap that continues to exist between the experimental approaches which are common across the arts and the focus on technology-centred solutions that continue to characterise both public policy and innovation management in tackling societal challenges.

ELIA plays a key role in facilitating the sharing of knowledge around adapting to, utilising, and exploiting new technologies in arts education. We are committed to helping our members prepare artists for work in a rapidly advancing technological world.

ELIA is part of the Exchanged community led by Zurich University of the Arts.

In the frame of this strategic priority, ELIA, together with its Supporting Members has developed an innovative series of events, ELIA Future Arts. ELIA Future Arts is an experimental, interactive online series that explores the potential of technological developments in immersive and interactive arts education. This series of online sessions aims to explore the limitless possibilities of teaching and learning, play, experience, aesthetics, and interactivity in the virtual space.

ELIA Future Arts invites participants to experience new possibilities, co-create in a virtual environment, and discover unchartered digital territories. Together, we will uncover new teaching methods, create new digital spaces for collaboration, and discuss the potential of VR and new technologies in arts education.

In the past two years, ELIA has organised several events on digitality and new technologies:
