ETHO Technical Community Conference: Crafting the Future

Theme

As higher arts education undergoes rapid transformation, the ETHO community will come together to celebrate the crucial role of technical staff in shaping future-proof technical teaching, learning and research.

Over three days, the ETHO community will create a space for exploration, uncovering new opportunities and learning from each other how emerging technologies are transforming making practices. Technical staff are essential not only to the smooth running of institutions but also to enhancing students' learning experiences, building resilience, and fostering an environment where traditional crafts and cutting-edge technology coexist.

Across institutions, local teams are already meeting challenges head-on, finding creative solutions to issues such as budget constraints while maintaining high innovation standards of service and quality. We will explore how the power of making continues to drive the development of technical teaching and learning, empowering technicians to unleash their creativity in addressing eco-responsibility.

Through discussions, presentations, and hands-on workshops, we will discover creative solutions emerging from the technical community. Special attention will be given to well-being and psychological support, ensuring our community has the resources it needs to thrive as drivers of change.

Connecting flights: If no direct flights are available from your location, you can connect via major European hubs like Amsterdam (Schiphol), Frankfurt, or Helsinki.

From neighbouring countries: Riga is connected to nearby cities via train, though the network may not be as extensive or high-speed as Western Europe. Currently there are trains available from cities like Vilnius (Lithuania) or Tallinn (Estonia) starting from 6 January 2025.

European train network: From farther afield in Europe, you may need to connect via Warsaw or other major cities.

Affordable and frequent: Companies like Lux Express and Ecolines operate high-quality transportation by bus between Riga and other Baltic cities such as Tallinn and Vilnius. These buses are often equipped with Wi-Fi and comfortable seats.

Long-distance options: International routes also connect Riga to Warsaw, Berlin, or even further European cities.

Ecological Responsibility

ELIA and RISEBA recognise that large international conferences negatively impact the environment due to the number of participants travellingthe footprint of hosting the event itself (e.g. through consumption and waste). To reduce the environmental impact of the ETHO Conference, ELIA and RISEBA will make greener choices in organising the conference and encourage participants to support this effort!

Several steps are being taken by ELIA and RISEBA to lower the conference’s impact on the environment and climate:

  • Accomodation: All recommended hotels are easily accessible from the conference venue, either on foot orwith a short ride using public transport. These hotels are also taking ecological measures to be more environmentally friendly.
  • Travel: Participants are encouraged to travel by train or bus to Riga, if possible, or to make other sustainable travel arrangements. If flying is necessary, consider choosing a direct flight (if available), as it produces lower carbon emissions than flights with transfers. Within Riga, walking or using public transportation is recommended.
  • Food & Drinks: Catering at the event has been selected based on sustainability criteria and will feature local, seasonal, and vegetarian options. Participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottle.
  • Materials: Printed materials and giveaways will be kept to a minimum. During registration, please let us know if you need a printed programme (large-print versions are available). Participants are encouraged to bring their own (tote) bag for storing conference materials. Tote bags will not be handed out at the venue.
  • Awareness: To raise awareness about environmental sustainability, our sustainable actions will be shared with our suppliers and partners. Before, during, and after the conference, we will communicate and create dialogue with participants to help us co-create a more sustainable event.

ELIA and RISEBA are aligning the conference’s sustainability efforts to the SHIFT Eco-Guidelines for Networks.
