PIE Annual Meeting 2024
Prague, Czechia
The Paradox of Internationalisation

5 – 7 June 2024
Hosted by the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (AMU) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU)

Higher education institutions have seen growing numbers of international student populations, the continued establishment of English as a common language, new mediums of instruction such as hybrid and digital learning, increased mobility of staff and students, and globalisation. It is these aspects that form the notion of internationalisation in higher arts education as we know it, along with growing concerns surrounding various paradoxes emerging from the internationalisation paradigm.

Students and staff, all benefit from exposure to intercultural and international perspectives, as the diversification of curricula helps to achieve Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI), promoting social safety and facilitating intercultural understanding and collaboration.

Despite these advantages, the paradoxes that internationalisation present can be seen as quite daunting. Challenging topics have arisen such as climate change, political shifts towards right-wing parties, the divide between the Global North and the Global South, and the Covid-19 pandemic, and cases of inequality in various factions. The PIE Working Group invites you to explore ‘The Paradox of Internationalisation’ in this context at the next PIE Annual Meeting in Prague, Czechia hosted by the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.

This event questions:

  • How dependent are we on international students for the purpose of internationalisation or are they key to financial sustainability?
  • How can we integrate students in local society in a time of growing nationalism and limited accommodation space?
  • How can we preserve national languages in relation to the prevalence as English as the language of tuition?
  • How can we achieve equity in higher arts education for all students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, locally and internationally?
  • How can we prioritise students' mental health in times of such uncertainty?

Let us address these growing concerns together in order make internationalisation in higher arts education sustainable and accessible for all. Join us.

Registration fee: €100 (incl. two dinners, two lunches, coffee breaks, materials, event support, networking opportunities)

Host institutions

The Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (AMU) is a leading educational art institution in Central Europe. The university is divided into three independent faculties, each specialised in its own artistic endeavour: theatre (DAMU), film and TV (FAMU) and music and dance (HAMU). Each faculty offers accredited study programmes in English as well as short-term individual internships, exchange programmes, specialized courses and opportunities to study abroad. Students seek to refine their specific abilities under the tutelage of active professionals of Europe’s cultural and intellectual scene, top ranking filmmakers, theatre dramaturges and stage performers, musical virtuosos and master dancers with the emphasis on a uniquely individual approach. The highest standards of artistic education are reflected in the frequent prestigious awards achieved at domestic and international festivals and events. All three faculties are located in the heart of Prague’s historical centre. Prague is home to a number of famous cultural attractions with great connection with the rest of Europe. In addition to this, the capital of the Czech Republic is one of the best student destinations and has also been ranked third on the list of 100 safest cities in the world!

The educational and artistic mission of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU) is founded on a constant pursuit and articulation of aesthetic, technological and political connections between tradition, contemporaneity and the future. With its core values rooted in the promotion of individual and artistic integrity and inclusion, the Academy is dedicated to the advancement of creativity, experimentation, critical thinking and a socially engaged attitude. Founded in 1799, for the past two centuries the Academy has counted many leading artists among its teachers and students, including such figures as František Kupka, Josef Gočár, Jindřich Štyrský, Magdalena Jetelová and Eva Koťátková. Over the years, the Academy expanded from traditional fields of art such as sculpture, painting and printmaking by adding schools of architecture and art restoration and the fields of new media, intermedia and performance. AVU currently offers MFA programmes in various specializations, art restoration programmes and a master’s programme in architecture. It places particular emphasis on artistic research and doctoral degree programmes in Fine Arts, Architecture, Restauration and Art Theory/History. Besides educational activities, the Academy runs its own publishing house, a gallery, and two research departments: the AVU Academic Research Centre (VVP AVU) and the Laboratory for Art, Research and Graduate Education (LARGE AVU).
