How do sewing skills maintain their significance in the age of virtual prototyping? What ethical considerations surround the use of body-scanning technologies? And how does AI challenge our understanding of originality?
This online session hosted by ETHO on Digital Fashion Education, delves into the Me-You-Us research project. This project explores the integration of digital tools such as 3D-prototyping,
VR, AR, and AI, into fashion design education within Higher Arts Institutes. It explores the impact of these new digital tools on pedagogical practices and whether they can be used to create more sustainable, inclusive, and diverse futures
for fashion design.
Emily Shahaj from the University for the Creative Arts will talk about the Digital Fashion Master's programme, where she teaches interdisciplinary practice and bridges the disciplines of fashion and gaming. Her teaching and research focus on topics around virtual identity, utilising digital innovations to promote sustainability in fashion, and exploring consumer behaviours related to avatar customisation.
Alexa Pollman, lecturer of the Fashion Futures Master's programme at London College of Fashion will moderate the webinar. As a lecturer and designer, she speculates and presents possible fashion futures. She applies practice-based research using performance, fashion, technology and interaction to create participatory and inclusive experiences.
Alexa will lead the discussion on how digital tools are shaping fashion, and consequently, fashion education. She will pose questions about our capacity to dream and envision possible futures, as well as our ability to critically engage with the developments within digital cultures.
The aim of this session is to exchange insights and perspectives derived from our shared experiences, envisioning how the future of fashion design education might look if we embrace new technologies. We will explore the potential impact of these innovations
and the technical, organisational, and pedagogical challenges that may arise.
This event is initiated by the research project Me-You-Us, an international research collaboration between the University of Ljubljana [Slovenia], Willem de
Kooning Academy Rotterdam [Netherlands], and Design School Kolding [Denmark], funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ program.
In this online session the following topics will be explored:
- How can digital tools drive a paradigm shift towards ecological sustainability in fashion design?
- How can the integration of digital tools and virtual representation promote greater inclusivity and diversity in fashion?
- What new skills, methods, and competencies are necessary for the digital evolution in fashion design education?
