ETHO Online Session: Future Fashion Education Thursday, 24 April 2025 This session explored the ME-YOU-US project and examined how pioneering art academies are transforming fashion education and shaping a more sustainable, inclusive, and diverse future through digital and interdisciplinary practices. Key topics included interdisciplinarity and collaboration, new technologies, and future visions and storytelling. ETHO Technical Community Conference: Crafting the Future 19 - 21 March 2025 The ETHO Technical Community Conference 2025 took place in Riga, Latvia, hosted by RISEBA – University of Applied Sciences. As higher arts education undergoes rapid transformation, the ETHO community gathered to celebrate the crucial role of technical staff in shaping future-proof technical teaching, learning, and research. Through discussions, presentations, and hands-on workshops, participants discovered creative solutions emerging from the technical community. Special attention was given to well-being and psychological support, ensuring the community had the resources needed to thrive as drivers of change. ETHO Online Session: New Material Practice in Biolabs Wednesday, 5 March 2025 This session explored the creative and material experiments taking place in art academies with (bio)-labs as dynamic sites of research and learning. The discussion highlighted pioneering institutions where new material practices are being redefined and reimagined. The session examined how material research unfolded within these environments, the insights gained, and the challenges and opportunities that arose from these innovative creative practices. Key topics included the material knowledge being developed, the lessons learned from these initiatives, and how students can be equipped with the skills needed to respond to climate crisis and sustainability issues as makers, artists, and designers. ETHO Online Session: Digital Fashion Education Monday, 13 May 2024 How do sewing skills maintain their significance in the age of virtual prototyping? What ethical considerations surround the use of body-scanning technologies? And how does AI challenge our understanding of originality? This online session hosted by ETHO on Digital Fashion Education, delved into the Me-You-Us research project. This project explores the integration of digital tools such as 3D-prototyping, VR, AR, and AI, into fashion design education within Higher Arts Institutes. It explores the impact of these new digital tools on pedagogical practices and whether they can be used to create more sustainable, inclusive, and diverse futures for fashion design. ETHO Technical Community Conference: Pick & Mix 22 - 24 February 2023 Hosted by the Royal College of Art (RCA) in collaboration with local ETHO partners across London and South East England. The ETHO Core Group invited ELIA member colleagues from all artistic disciplines to explore technical teaching and to contribute to an experiential, and memorable programme. ETHO Online: Setting up a Bio/Nature Lab Wednesday, 26 January 2022 Do you work in an art school or design academy technical department? Are you thinking of creating bio labs that drive students to investigate the climate crisis? Then this practical ETHO Online session is for you. Learn from ecological experts and discover how to set up your school’s first bio/nature lab. ETHO Online: The Changing Role of Technical Staff Wednesday, 26 May 2021 As technologies, environments, teaching practices and skillsets are evolving in higher art education, the role of technical staff is changing as well. How are technicians being involved in the curriculum development? What connections/bridges should be generated between technical and academic staff? How are the technical and practical skills being implemented in the teaching of future artists? Are the roles being re-defined? ETHO Online: Immerse in the New Technology Wednesday, 7 April 2021 Studio, workshop and classroom spaces across higher arts education institutions are changing. Digitalisation and new technologies are being embraced in teaching and learning, opening up new opportunities and challenges. How are digital developments affecting the role of technical staff? How is hands-on learning changing? How can technology serve all artistic disciplines? What is special about teaching in the field of new technologies? ETHO invites you on an exploration of interactions between arts and digital technology together with the Immersive Arts Space (IAS) from Zurich University of the Arts. ETHO Online: Equal Opportunity and Inclusivity 3 February 2021 Technical staff, technical managers and educators involved in the technical aspects of teaching and learning at ELIA member institutions were invited to participate in the first ETHO Online Session in 2021. Attendees joined the interactive and facilitated discussion exploring the role workshops and the technical community play in supporting and addressing issues around equality, diversity and inclusion in Higher Arts Education.
