ETHO Online: Re-inventing the workshop with social distancing

Wednesday 13 May 2020

As COVID-19 measures in some countries are starting to ease, higher arts education institutions are challenged with the next step of re-launching their activities and adapting to a ‘new normal’. What will a post-lockdown situation look like for hands-on learning? How will physical spaces and workshops function, considering health and safety and social distancing restrictions?

This ETHO online meeting focused on the re-opening of workshops and post-lockdown making scenarios.

Presentations were given by:

Albert Fuster i Martí, ELISAVA Barcelona School of Design and Engineering

Spain has been one of the countries severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and now ELISAVA Barcelona School of Design and Engineering is preparing to reopen its workshops. Albert talked about the new measures they are putting in place to ensure students and staff can continue ‘making’ in a safe environment.

Bart Vissers, Royal Academy of Art, The Hague

Royal Academy of Arts The Hague is the first art academy in the Netherlands to reopen the workshops after closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What precautionary measures were taken? What lessons have been learnt in the first two weeks of reopening? And most importantly, how does this align with the existing guiding principles with regards to workshop activity and education.

The recording of the online session is available exclusively to ELIA members here.
