Future Readiness (Careers In the Arts)

FUTURE READINESS (CAREERS IN THE ARTS)

Following up the work developed by the NXT Project (Creative Europe co-funded project 2015-2018), the ELIA Representative Board encouraged the formation of a working group and platform focusing on sustainable careers and entrepreneurship in the arts.

The definition of a career in the arts certainly includes full-time artists, but to a much greater extent also careers built on artistic competencies, which are put into practice in various sectors of society today. The focus of this working group is to consider the attributes, skills, competencies, and knowledge, in addition to the discipline-specific competencies that graduating artists should be equipped with to maximise their potential in their chosen careers within the evolving ecosystem. The working group also aims to develop a package of information, approaches, and case studies. This will supplement the tools of art educators in preparing their students for sustainable and fulfilling artistic careers. Through the creation of a community of educators in the arts, the working group facilitates the sharing of knowledge and best practices.

Four Initial Priority Areas

The group has begun the task of setting initial priorities for the Platform, as follows (not in order of priority):

  • Identifying the skills that artists need
  • Teaching approaches and methods for illustrating and teaching these skills
  • Demonstrating the value and impact of the arts
  • Advocacy to address the issues of resistance to sustainable arts careers education

In March 2020, a Sustainable Careers Online Consultation investigated these topics.

The conversation developed further during the Platform meeting at the Pre-Programme of the ELIA Biennial Conference on 17 November 2020.

The group also closely follows the development of the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT) Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) for Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs). ELIA published a Position Paper on this topic available here.
